People assume the book was written during what some see as the final gasp of patriarchy—before birth control and the women’s liberation movement started the slow, agonizing process of pursuing equality for women and raising consciousness around the world. On the other hand, a book written three decades ago still resonates with a particular power. Hulu didnt adapt The Handmaid’s Tale as a revered classic kept behind glass, but rather as a pulsing, living work of literature that speaks to modern-day America. Not many books can retain that kind of power for thirty years, and The Handmaid’s Tale remains a powerfully current story—for three distinct reasons that go beyond politics. Margaret Atwood Just Updated It One aspect of The Handmaid’s Tale that is often overlooked is the author’s dedication to the story. When the author herself regards the story as a living, breathing work and continued to discuss and develop the ideas within it, the story retains some of the immediacy that surrounded it upon publication. In fact, Atwood has actually just expanded the story. As part of the launch of the updated audio version of the novel on Audible (recorded by Claire Danes in 2012, but with a completely new sound design) Atwood wrote both an afterward discussing the book and its legacy, but also new material that extends the story. The book famously ends with the line â€Å"Are there any questions?† The new material comes in the form of an interview with Professor Piexoto, which is the sort of thing fans dream about. The material is performed by a full cast in the Audible version, giving it a rich, realistic feel. It’s also a little mind-bending, since the ending of the novel makes it clear that the good professor is discussing Offred’s story far in the future, long after Gilead has disappeared, based on audio recordings she left behind, which Atwood herself has noted makes the Audible version appropriate. It’s Not Really Science Fiction ... or Fiction First of all, we should note that Atwood dislikes the term â€Å"science fiction† when applied to her work, and prefers â€Å"speculative fiction.† It might seem like a subtle point, but it makes sense. The Handmaid’s Tale doesn’t actually involve any weird science or anything implausible. A revolution establishes a Theocratic dictatorship that severely limits all human rights (and especially those of women, who are even forbidden to read) while ecological factors reduce the fertility of the human race significantly, resulting in the creation of Handmaids, fertile women who are used for breeding. None of that is particularly sci-fi. Secondly, Atwood has stated that nothing in the book is made-up—in fact, she’s said there is â€Å"... nothing in the book that didn’t happen, somewhere.† That’s part of the chilling power of The Handmaid’s Tale. All you need to do is check out some of the darker areas of the Internet, or even some of the legislative bodies around the country, to see that male attitudes towards women haven’t changed nearly as much as we might like. When the Vice President of the United States won’t have dinner alone with a woman who isn’t his wife, it’s not hard to imagine a world not so different from Atwood’s vision coming around... again. In fact, many seem to have forgotten the 1991 film adaptation of the book, with a script written by Harold Pinter and a cast featuring Natasha Richardson, Faye Dunaway, and Robert Duvall—a film that almost didn’t get made despite the power of those names because the project encountered â€Å"a wall of ignorance, hostility, and indifference,† according to journalist Sheldon Teitelbaum as reported in The Atlantic. He goes on to say that â€Å"Movie executives declined to back the project, stating ‛that a film for and about women †¦ would be lucky if it made it to video.’† Next time you wonder if The Handmaid’s Tale is so far-fetched, consider that statement. The Book Is Constantly Under Attack You can often judge the power and influence of a novel by the number of attempts that are made to ban it—another ghostly echo when you consider that women in the novel are forbidden to read. Analyzing the Essay Sample - Part 2In a recent post, I discussed how you can test for things in your essay sample analysis. In this post, I will discuss some of the ways that you can analyze a sample in a broader sense and some of the considerations you should keep in mind when making a decision as to whether or not you want to use the analysis.I strongly encourage you to read the first part of the piece, where I discuss the benefits of writing a short paragraph for your essay. In that same discussion, I also discussed the benefits of using a single sentence for the overall analysis. I still strongly encourage you to follow that recommendation, even though there are many other benefits to using several sentences or a few paragraphs to begin the analysis. However, I will make three points with regards to using a sample analysis.One, the sample analysis on the essay is usually very brief. In my most recent post, I suggested that you consider starting with a single sentence. Using that same sample, let's use it to analyze a sample. Now, if you used a paragraph or a whole page of analysis, you would not get a sense of the main idea. You would not get a clear picture of the central idea, because it would be too long.Two, the paragraph you used to start your analysis would be too short, because of the weak intro. The strong opening needs to set the stage for the primary theme of the essay. I know that people are accustomed to longer essays, but in this case, it is sometimes better to go with a single sentence to begin the analysis. In fact, the stronger the opening, the better. It will give you a sense of how the theme flows throughout the entire essay.Three, the analysis is usually too detailed, because it addresses too many broadconclusions at once. For example, if you begin with the concept of global capitalism, and then go into detail about a couple of world regions in which different cultures were dominant, it is easy to get away with having the conclusion 'all countries follow capitalism'. On the other hand, if you began by mentioning the contrast between American and European culture, and then went into detail about the different styles of Western culture, it would be very difficult to get around having the conclusion 'European culture is more liberal than American culture'.With these three points in mind, you should try to analyze the essay on the essay flight for the purpose of beginning a discussion. But you should not read the entire thing! If you do, you would be very surprised to find that the analysis stops and doesn't begin anywhere else in the essay. Why?Because the focus of the essay, and therefore the beginning of the discussion, is that which is discussed at the very end of the essay. It is that end that you need to hit if you are going to get a reasonable discussion off of your analysis. Use the analysis to give you a good starting point for discussion. Then, go on to your topic after you have hit the 'end' of the analysis.U sing the analysis on the essay flight for discussion is an important part of the process. But you should not let the analysis drag on forever, as it is going to drive you crazy if you do that.

Tituba also says that she saw Goody Osburn with the devil. Tituba probably did not see anything but Goody Good and Goody Osburn were the first to be brought up by Reverend Parris. 6.When Goody Osburn is accused of witchcraft, Mrs. Putnam immediately says, "I knew it! Goody Osburn were midwife to me three times. I begged you, Thomas, did I not? I begged him not to call Osburn because I feared her. My babies always shriveled in her hands!" (47) This shows that Mrs. Putnam never really liked Goody Osburn, and had no doubt that she was involved in witchcraft. 7.Abigail first denies that she was involved in witchcraft but then later reveals that she "danced for the devil" (48) Abigail then says she say Sarah Good with the devil and Goody Osburn with the devil and Bridget Bishop with the devil. Abigail is probably saying this to prove a point that other people in the village are involved with the devil not just her. Then later Abigail says she saw other girls with the devil. Abigail is most likely just saying these things to rile everybody up. 8.At the end it is clear that there are those who believe that witchcraft is going on and responsible for the girls' behavior, and those you don't.

Diversity is used to describe political entities who have identifiable differences in their background and lifestyles including ethnic minorities. Inclusion means to meet your learners needs, which some may have more than others. These needs should be appropriately met to enable full participation in the classroom. The main issue related to equality and diversity would be exclusion. If the tutor does not meet the needs for those with a different background then it can often end with the student feeling not only left out but to feel neglected and can lead to missed lessons and also feeling that they don’t belong their. The tutor should be committed to providing equal opportunities for each of his/her students. You should demonstrate your commitment to equal opportunities through everything you say and do in your work with adult students. †Ã‚   (1993:13). Promotion of equality within the classroom is not only an expectation but a requirement by law. ‘All students must feel that they are positively and equally valued and accepted, and that their efforts to learn are recognised, and judged without bias. It is not enough that they are tolerated. How you communicate with your learners is essential ensuring learners can understand what you are saying. Ensuring body language and comments are appropriate and are no offensive. Teaching methods are also important and you will need to make sure that your methods are varied and support all learning styles. Ensuring your learners can all participate is also important, therefore not excluding any of them. Allowing your learners to establish working relationships effectively, ensuring everyone is included and that the room is accessible and safe for people with sensory disabilities or lack of mobility. Additional support may be required to enable you to support equality and diversity this could be in the form of a learning support assistant, adapted resources, peer support, varied presentation. Although inclusion is about supporting your learners needs, it may not always be possible to do this without support for yourself. You should be aware of your limits of responsibility and know when and where to access support for both you and your learners. If you have a line manager then they should be your first point of contact. Your colleagues may be another point as they may have experienced something similar. It is your responsibility to find out what support is available for you. Supporting Equality and Diversity is extremely important and is also a legal requirement. When planning your lessons you should be taking this into account and structuring your lessons appropriately. If you are unsure you should be aware of your limits and seek advice from your line manager.
